erikavankirkceramics

Hello, I’m Erika Van Kirk, a ceramic artist working and living in Monroe, Michigan. I studied at Monroe County Community College and received my BFA at Sienna Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. My current work is not restricted to sculptural pieces; I also create functional pottery.

My sculptural work currently explores organic forms inspired from nature. The pieces I create are designed to appear as organisms that could be, or once were, alive. They reference such forms as shells, corals, fossils, gills of mushrooms, marine invertebrates, and microscopic life. The shapes and textures seem familiar, yet unidentifiable to the viewer, forming an instant visual connection while encouraging a closer examination of the work. Defying specific visual classification, the pieces emit an almost alien feeling, as if they were recently discovered species, or specimens of those that have been long extinct.

Please feel free to e-mail me at vankirk.erika@gmail.com if you have any questions or comments.
